News? In a letter? What will they think of next?!

In case you haven't reading your emails or checking out the radio webpage, WTSC recently published what will be the first of a monthly club newsletter. This summer issue is primarily a 'Meet your Eboard' issue so everyone can at least associate faces with executive board members as well as learn a little bit about us. Future issues will highlight any going ons at WTSC such as cool club events, bands in the recording studio, new album reviews, ect. Enjoy the summer reading!

Drug/Crime Use in the Potsdam Community

Due to the recent happenings in and around the Clarkson community, Justin Ricci will be interviewing Vice President for University Outreach and Student Affairs Kathryn Johnson Live on WTSC. The purpose of this interview will be to discuss openly the perceivable influx of violence and drugs into the community and what steps and precautions are being put into alleviating the problem. Again this interview will be taking place Monday, July 2nd at 7PM.

This interview will be informative to both the local Potsdam community and the surrounding college students. Justin Ricci is now a M.S. student at Clarkson University and a long time member of WTSC. You can listen in over the airwaves via turning your dial to 91.1FM or streaming the webcast.

SaveNetRadio Day of Silence

In case you haven't noticed yet, WTSC has been broadcasting silence both over the airwaves and the web stream today. No, it isn't because lightening damaged any of the equipment or because the broadcast antenna was ran over by a bulldozer... again. This time it's intentional.

WTSC is taking part in the SaveNetRadio Coalition's day of silence. Along with numerous other webcasters, we are protesting a 300 percent increase in the royalty rates Internet radio broadcasters are required to pay. The silence over the web streams is meant to raise awareness of the issue and to provide a real sense of what Internet radio is doomed to become after July 15th of this year, at which time the 300 percent royalty rate increase will go into affect retroactively to January 1st, 2006.

This is all due to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) successfully lobbying of the Copyright Royalty Board to fatten their collective wallet. This board, which was established by Congress in May 2005, is responsible for determining royalty rates. It was their decision on March 2nd this year to implement this rate increase.

So what does this mean for you and how will silencing the webcasts for a day help? It means that your favorite Internet radio sites such as Pandora, Rhapsody... and possibly even WTSC will be unable to pay what amounts to an extortion and be forced in to bankruptcy, permanently silencing Internet radio. What the SaveNetRadio Coalition hopes to achieve with this day of silence is a public outcry that will at least strengthen the case to temporarily hold this decision up in a Court of Appeals.

There is hope, however. Right now their are two bills going through Congress that should either one pass would make Internet radio royalty rates in line with those paid by satellite radio.

You can help. First, be informed. For more information, head over to http://www.savenetradio.org. Secondly, write your congressman. Let them know that you think allowing the RIAA and CRB to force Internet radio webcasters off the "airwaves" is complete bullshit.

A long summer and no DJs makes WTSC something... something... something...

Yeah, it's been a while since this was last updated so you'll have to excuse me and everyone else here at The Source since finals are always a killer as well as that whole "summer job" thing. But fear not! I'll be up doing some work this summer at Clarkson as well as Jb, my fellow co-host on The Spinmasters, so you can expect to hear some awesome tunes hitting the airwaves. Also, Nick Ruebel will be fully demonstrating the prowess of our remote Internet broadcast system as he'll be broadcasting his own weekly show from home throughout the summer months.

And not to out due ourselves (okay, maybe a little), we've come up with a newer logo which you can check out below.

1st Annual CU Community 5k Run/Walk

Res Life and SAAC will be hosting a 5k run/walk event on April 22nd stating at 2pm. Registration and race packets are available at the Cheel Information Desk Monday through Friday from 8am until 9pm. The entry fee is $15, which includes a t-shirt. All proceeds go to benefit Citizens Against Violent Acts and Cystic Fibrosis Research. A barbeque will be held after the race along with prizes to be given out and course your favorite radio station's Remote Crew will be there to provide some awesome sounds. Open House 07

WTSC was up and running at the 2007 Open House. The open house went very well giving us all an opportunity to talk to next year's freshmen. After the open house, the station was filled with people recording, doing shows, and building up studio B. For those that might be interested, Studio B will be used mainly as a scratching studio.

Face-melting Guitar Hero II Contest Give-a-ways

For those of you that missed it, The Joz and I (J. Bird) held a Guitar Hero II contest Wednesday night at our Live! from Empire show. Up for grabs were four tickets to Springfest and they definitely went fast! There was some fierce competition between the wannabe rockstars with kids ripping up ridiculous scores to win the coveted tickets. Still in the mood for free tickets but disappointed you missed out on the action? Fear not as we may have more tickets to give away at next Wednesday night's show, so make sure you catch us broadcasting live right from Empire diner from 9pm to 11pm.

Relay for Life

Clarkson University will be hosting its 3rd Annual Relay for Life on April 13th through 14th in the IRC fieldhouse from 7pm until 8am. For those not in the loop, Relay for Life is a fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society, with proceeds going towards treatments for current cancer patients as well as research into cancer fighting drugs and technologies.

If you're looking for a way to donate or start your own Relay team, check out www.acsevents.org/relay/ny/clarksonuniversity. Last year, Clarkson students and the Potsdam community raised over $27,000 and around $13,000 during the inaugural event. This year's goal is to reach $35,000.

As always, WTSC's Remote Crew will be bringing you the best tunes throughout the night. Of course there will also be volleyball and poker tournaments, an open pool, a frozen t-shirt contest, Miss Relay competition, Battle of the Sexes, and a couple of live bands. So come out to support the American Cancer Society and to have a blast!
